But
apart from the evidence from eye-witnesses and victims,
irrefutable
evidence at the guilt of the shark is often provided. The
discovery
of a shark's teeth in the wounds, or finding missing
portions
of victims in a shark's stomach, at times makes it possible to
determine
the actual species of shark responsible. In an attack off
Rey
Island in the Gulf of Panama in 1944 parts of two teeth found in
the
wound of a sailor buy the surgeon who operated on him proved
conclusively
that a shark-the great white shark- was responsible
for
his injuries.
Other
evidence for the responsibility of the shark for the majority
of
these attacks is overwhelming. In Australia and many other parts of
the
world, the menace is taken so seriously that practically all ocean
beaches
where numbers of people bathe are equipped with look-out
towers
to spot sharks and warn bathers of their presence. Often,
during
summer months, the shark warning bell clangs and it is
remarkable
how quickly a large section of surf can be emptied
of
bathers.
Naturally
the shark is not the only terror that cruises the seas and
inhabits
the estuaries. There are sea snakes, octopuses, jellyfish, squids
and
congers. But the only creature likely to inflict injuries which could
be
mistaken for those caused by sharks, crocodiles, sawfishes
and
barracudas.
