The
most detailed of these early accounts comes from the Greek poet,
Leonidas
of tarentum. Leonidas tells of the death of a sponge diver,
Tharsys,
who descended into the depths of the Ionian Sea to loosen an
anchor,
Tharsys rose to the surface and was holding out his hand to
be
grasped by his companions on the boat, when a terrible sea-monster
snapped
him clean in two and gulped down his lower half as far as
the
navel. The sailors brought the other portion ashore and buried
it
on the beach, Thus Tbharsys was buried, according ti
Loeniday
"both on land and in the sea"
What
is thought to be the earliest pictorial record of a shark attack
was
recently discovered in excavations at Lacco Amenoin Ischia, It is
an
ancient vase depicting shipwrecked sailors. One is being attacked
by
a shark, The vase,- reconstructed by Dr.gf.Buchner-is believed to have
been
made about 725B.C. See ATTACK
STORY#1
Despite
this evidence of sharks attacking men more than 2000 years ago,
there
are probably multitudes of people in the world today who
point-blank
refuse to believe sharks will ever attack a man, A skeptic in
the
US once went so far as to offer a large reward for the production of
an
authentic case of shark bite.
